HEADLINE FOR THE MONTH
NOTE: THIS ONE COMES AT YOU EARLY BECAUSE GERALDINA IS OFF TO INDIA, REEMBERTO IS OFF TO ATLANTA, REMBE Jr. IS OFF TO ORLANDO, AND IGGY OFF TO CALIFORNIA... So, enJoy!
Dado todo lo que esta pasando en Cuba, fuera bueno empezar este mes aclarando que
NO HA CAMBIADO NADA... Como dice el chiste:
P- ¿Cómo se hace un Raul?
R.-Coges un uniforme verde olivo y lo empiezas a llenar de mierda;
pero es importante que utilices una medida exacta, porque si te
pasas, te puede salir un Fidel, un Chávez, o un Evo.
If you want to see a very serious take on this issue, see a recent Washington Post article written by the wife of one of the many political prisoners in Cuba HERE
...IN OTHER NEWS (FAMILY & OTHERWISE):
Iggy graduates from High School FRIDAY JUNE 6th. We are working on the formal invite which we'll send out soon... But for now, if you'd like to take a journey of Iggy's educational pursuit, including his school pictures through the years, visit HERE.
His High School Team (St. John's College High School) was just rated #10 NATIONALLY by the reputable magazine "Baseball America"... See HERE [Pretty incredible, actually: 9 of his teammates are going to Division One school!... Could have been 10, but Iggy chose Swarthmore (Division III.) ]
The Marlins will get a new stadium for the 2011 season!!! ... Just in time to establish the Sugar Kings in Havana as their official AAA Team!
They tell us that Jose Carlos had an hernia operation, tio Elena fell, tia Carmin had cataract surgery, Beba had a biopsis, Lucy went through an asthma scare, and tia Maya had a 'jaqueca'... Just your typical month in a familia with over 1/2 its members over 60 years old!.. And, if you'd like to understand the many CUBAN MEDICAL TERMS to know what your elder relative may have, check out HERE.
We had the opportunity of going to New York for the day where we saw the incredible off-broadway play CELIA... Fantastica!... It is presented through the eyes of Pedro, as he tells his young Puerto Rican hospital assistant how much he loved Celia... Simply riveting! --- And yes, you folks in Miami are just gonna have to wait till its second run :-)
PICTURE OF THE MONTH:
NEW & UPDATED LINKS TO FAMILY PICS AND/OR KOOL CUBA STUFF:
NEW picks of Lukas (with big bro!) HERE
BY FAR, THE "WEB SITE OF THE MONTH": www.CUBANOLOGY.com Yet another example that Cubans have a very "interesting" presence on the web... When you check it out, go to the DISCO (yes, disco!) link. Interesting that Cubans of a certain generation have 'disco' in common...
So, wanna see Cuba-related videos galore?... How are these for a few, all pre-screened 'entre familia' (by our Atlanta familia) to ensure authenticity:
- Fascinating GRINGO view of the Cuban reality: HERE
- Cancion a los Balseros (cantada por Amaury Gutierrez, un artista que vi en Miami): HERE
- Video musical de la musica de 'hoy' en Cuba: HERE
- El "futuro" de Cuba - opiniones del 'pueblo': HERE
FAMILY TRIVIA QUESTIONS:
While this Trivia comes from 'one side of the family tree', it can truly serve as a 'bridge' to the other branch...
QUESTION: Who is the only couple in the family that got married in a winery? And, how were their vows unique?
PARTING THOUGHT:
In the spirit of the President's Day we celebrated in February, and thanks to our Tampa Familia, here is the prayer George Washington offered for our great adopted country:
'Almighty God; We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that Thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government; and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy, and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility, and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion, and without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.' Want to see other prayers we've collected recently? Go HERE
Have a happy happy St. Patrick's day!
