NEWS FROM THE WEIRD SIDE OF LIFE (I was going to leave this for a 'Trivia Question', but it is too good to pass up...)
Carlos Juan Finlay - as I am sure the elder academicians in the family know, but I am also sure the younger generations does NOT - was born (and practiced!*) in Camaguey and went on to discover that the mosquito is the carrier of yellow fever... Documents of yellow fever in Cuba are well documented [see HERE] ... Well, it seems that amazingly enough there was 1 case of yellow fever reported in Real Campina in 1905 AND the carrier came from NEW ORLEANS!... Of course, 10 years later that is where Abuelo and Abuelo went to... hmmm...
And, speaking of New Orleans, here is YET ANOTHER Cuban connection: The first Catholic Bishop to be physically present in the newly created diocese of New Orleans in 1781 was Father Cirilo de Barcelona, the auxiliary bishop of Santiago de Cuba!
*By the way, the fact that Finlay practiced in Camaguey may explain the propensity of drug manufacturing laboratories there, including "Los Laboratios Varela"... Could there have been a connection?
